Deformation-controlled long-period seismicity in low-cohesion volcanic sediments

چکیده

Volcano seismicity is an important tool in monitoring and forecasting activity at volcanoes globally. Volcanic earthquakes show diverse spectral characteristics, of which shallow long-period (low-frequency) long-duration tremor are generally interpreted as indicators fluid migration, potential eruption precursors. Here we that a common low-cohesion volcanic sediment from the Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy) produces low-frequency it undergoes deformation dry conditions. We employed acoustic-emission rock-deformation experiments range strain rates to produce events that, when normalized for scale, were spectrally indistinguishable observed natural settings. The generation these signals was enhanced lower laboratory rates. Correlated X-ray tomography samples before after constrained source distributed damage. Long-period may be generated by weak material subsurface, not solely movement, according rock experiments.

Deformation and seismicity of Taiwan.

14C-dated Holocene coastal uplift, conventional and satellite geodetic measurements, and coseismic and aseismic fault slip reveal the pattern of distributed deformation at Taiwan resulting from convergence between the Philippine Sea plate and Eurasia; as in other subduction orogenic settings, the locus of strain release and accumulation is strongly influenced by changes in fault geometry across...

Cooling magma model for deep volcanic long-period earthquakes

Deep long-period events (DLP events) or deep low-frequency earthquakes (deep LFEs) are deep earthquakes that radiate low-frequency seismic waves. While tectonic deep LFEs on plate boundaries are thought to be slip events, there have only been a limited number of studies on the physical mechanism of volcanic DLP events around the Moho (crust-mantle boundary) beneath volcanoes. One reasonable mec...

Very-Long-Period Volcanic Tremor at Stromboli, Italy

We analyze a long time–space series of Stromboli volcanic tremors. A very-low-frequency content in the range of 0.02–0.5 Hz has been found by using spectral analysis and independent component analysis. Independent component analysis is an entropy-based technique. We observe the occurrence of a component having a period of 30 sec. Polarization analysis shows that the wave field comes mainly from...

Northern lowlands of Mars: Evidence for widespread volcanic flooding and tectonic deformation in the Hesperian Period

[1] Recent Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data have provided a new picture of the Martian northern lowland basin topography and surface roughness. In order to assess detailed topographic structure important in understanding the formation and evolution of the northern lowlands, we have removed regional slopes from the topography to produce a series of maps highlighting the local topographic...
